Decision-maker phones — why ranking beats another switchboard number

Append vendors and contact databases usually answer one question: "Is there a phone number on this account?" Sales teams need a different one: "If I dial right now, who is most likely to pick up — and is it the person who can say yes?"

That gap is why 411data ranks phones by decision-maker proximity instead of treating every valid NANP line as equal.

The problem with "a phone number"

A typical enriched row carries several numbers: main line, toll-free, a mobile tagged to an officer, maybe a number that actually belongs to outside counsel. Dialers import them in arbitrary order. Reps burn talk time on receptionists, voicemail trees, and wrong desks — then blame the list.

Competing on per-lookup price makes this worse. A $0.05 append that returns the switchboard is cheap per record and expensive per conversation.

The honest unit is per contacted decision maker, not per field returned.

How 411data ranks phones

After enrichment, phones are scored and ordered before they ever reach your export columns. The ranker (dm_phone_rank in the product) uses signals already on the lead graph:

Promoted

Demoted

Excluded entirely

The goal is not "more phones." It is the right phone first.

From ranking to your dialer

Ranking alone does not produce a dialer file. Custom Export Builder maps enriched rows into your schema — column names, delimiters, passthrough fields from the source file, and instructions like "put the best decision-maker line in number1, second choice in number2, never a legal line."

Enable the dm_phone_rank hint provider in the profile settings and the mapper receives a deterministically ordered candidate list per lead. Your column hints and file instructions decide which candidate lands in which slot. Preview a handful of rows before you pay for the full file (estimatepreview → run).

For the full upload-to-export path, start with batch CSV enrich.

What we do not claim

Try it

  1. Quickstart — mint a bearer at /connect if you need one.
  2. Upload a batch via the batch UI or API (cookbook).
  3. Build an export profile with dm_phone_rank hints (recipe).
  4. Automate with the developer guide and scoped usage keys (Connect hub recipe).

Reach the decision maker, not the switchboard — that is the job. Per-lookup race-to-the-bottom is not.
